This is a very raw post.
A few weeks ago I went outside to continue working on the yard behind my house. We let things go for the last few years due to the road construction right behind our house. It was pointless to do anything because it would have just been covered in dust, mud, and weeds from the work the crew was doing and most likely all my work would have been ruined.
When I went outside, I noticed that my rose bush was growing. I noticed buds on the ends of the stems. I noticed a healthy, thriving beautiful bush.
This has only happened one time since we have lived in the house. And, we have been here since 1997.
I became a little excited because I LOVE roses. I love their fragrance, I love their beauty, and I LOVE what they mean to me. Could this rose bush bloom? Why now? It has laid dormant for so many years. Some years, I never saw anything and I thought it had died. I have not done anything different to the soil or to the plant. Why is it blooming now?
If you know anything about me or my business, you know that the rose is a symbol and part of my business logo. A rose signifies beauty and love to me. But it has a history of meaning other things, too.

"Roses can also mean secrecy or confidentiality. The term “sub rosa”, meaning under the rose, comes from ancient times. Romans would hang roses from the ceilings of banquet halls, and it was understood that anything said under the influence of wine was to remain confidential.
-
In the Middle Ages, roses were also hung from the ceilings of meeting rooms. It was understood that everyone under the roses was sworn to secrecy.

Roses are also used on four tarot cards. The Fool, the Magician, the Strength card, and the Death card. On the Fool, the white rose symbolizes purity and is a reminder to cleanse the mind. On the Magician card, it signifies unfolding wisdom. On the Strength card, the rose represents balance. And on the Death card, it’s a reminder of purity, clarity, and transparency of intent."

The different colors of roses mean something, too.
Red roses symbolize love and romance. Pink roses symbolize grace, joy, and gratitude. Orange roses symbolize passion and enthusiasm. Yellow roses symbolize friendship, and White roses symbolize innocence.
This is what it means to me.
The rose in my business logo symbolizes life’s love and beauty, which shows through in my photographs. Roses also have thorns. I believe these thorns represent the trials and tribulations that can either make or break us. If we focus on the negative, our lives will never be like the sweet fragrance of a blooming rose. But if we work through our circumstances, we can eventually become like the sweet, beautiful rose in full bloom.
So, the rose is a reminder of whom we can become—to live our lives and become the people we are created to be despite any circumstance or trial that may come our way.
I believe there is good in everyone. I believe in treating people with respect and dignity. I believe that everyone should be valued and loved. Life has it's share of trials and problems, just like the thorns on the stems of the rose bush. And, that is all I saw for so many years. When my rose bush did grow, all I saw were the thorns. I never saw a flower.
For me, the timing of the blooms this year is incredible.
I feel like it is the beginning of a new life.
I believe the roses are blooming now to give me hope. The events that have been transpiring in the world have broken my heart. I feel anger when I see anyone being mistreated, hurt, or people sobbing because their life's work in their business has gone up in flames. I feel anger when I see the disrespect and dishonor towards others.
And, before my rose bloomed, I was also very scared and slept on the couch with a sword.
Yes, you heard that right. I do not believe in destroying people's property. I do not believe that doing that is the answer to issues. The lack of respect and violence really frightened me. So, I grabbed a real sword that we have-given to one of my daughters from her teacher years ago-and kept it close. I have the right to protect my husband and myself if anyone decides they want to destroy my home and everything I have worked so hard for.
Since that outside visit a few weeks ago, I have been checking on my rose bush and have seen it come to a beautiful full bloom. It is blooming and it is beautiful.
I believe that through all these trials, horrific acts of violence and destruction of property we will see beauty once again. Beauty from ashes.
I do not know what that will look like, but I believe it will happen. In some way. Some form. Really, my rose bush has not bloomed in years. I believe it has chosen this year to show it's glory and beauty to give me hope and to let me know that there is still love in the world.
