It's Ok to Be Who You Are
I often hear, " Oh, my child is just not cooperating. I am so sorry!" To which I say, "Not a worry at all, and certainly no need to apologize." Kids are who they are. Authentic, real, and living in the moment.
Of course, age plays a part in how they will act, usually. Your two year old is less likely to sit still than your five year old. Your one year old toddler is going to want to run around and play in the dirt.
And, all those things are certainly ok with me.
Being outside for a portrait session is totally different than being in a studio space. There are no boundaries! Kids want to run and explore rather than sitting or standing around posing in front of someone they recently met.
So, what do you do? How do you get some "posed" portraits?
I say, "First, let's just let your kids be who they are".
Getting the best photos for you is what is most important. So, I take many things into consideration in order to do that for you. Your children's ages and who they are will play a big part, for example. You can usually reason with a teenager or elementary school age child and explain what you will be doing. You can tell them that is important to you to have good behavior and to listen to the photographer. Most of the time, that works just fine.
But, if you have younger kids or ones that have a challenging time sitting or listening, it is different. We have to get creative and explore other ways to capture beautiful moments and photos of them.
Ruby wanted nothing more than to walk, run and explore. I am not that fast in keeping up with kiddos anymore, so it was a big of a challenge for me! Still, by following her, talking with her, giving her something to hold, and having her parents nearby I was able to capture a few images of just her.
We then incorporated fun activities with her that gave the family photos of all three of them together!
Even older kiddos might not want to participate and/or feel shy about being in front of the camera. Such was the case with Jacob, who is the oldest of three. He wanted to run just like his sisters and frolic in the grass.
So, I frolicked with him and his sisters, utilized the light in a great way, and captured their personalities perfectly!
And, in the end, we did get a few photos of the family together that best shows who they are. Our mission is to help you see YOUR family's love story so having posed portraits all the time that look like everyone else's does not necessarily showcase that.
Still, I understand that those type of portraits are important and have a place, so I do my best to try and incorporate that as well.
So, What Does This All Mean?
This means that I love capturing your family just as they are. If you choose Songs of Life Photography, you will see YOU, not just another posed portrait that looks like everyone else's.
It means that I choose to capture you and your loved ones authentically and I want to be inspired by your family, get to know you better, and learn more about each individual so I can give you what you really want.
A better connection, a better sense of love for each other, and to see your family's love story unfold!
