Value and Service
What is important to you when you need to make a big decision regarding something in your life or if you are investing your time and money into something valuable and important?
I am not talking about small, every day decisions, like what clothes to wear, or where to buy groceries. I am talking about larger life decisions, such as what apartment complex to move into, which real estate agent to go with when buying a new home, or which photographer to go with when thinking about family, senior, or children's portraits.
For me, what I value is a huge factor in making decisions like the ones above. I will go out of my way and pay more if the service is excellent and the business and it's employees have integrity and are genuine. And, on the other end, I will NOT go to a business if they are not genuine and lack integrity, even if their product is better and they cost less or more.
So, there are variables. But, still, what do you value? What is important to you?
I recently left a position in sales and membership at a non profit organization. I loved being with the people, learning about who they are and finding out their needs and what would be a good fit for them.
To me, all those things are imperative to know before you offer something to someone. Perhaps the person coming in for a tour of the facility only wants to take classes, not participate in swimming. If I had spoken only about the pool, and not asked any questions about what the person was interested in, then they probably would have walked right out and never came back.
I did not listen to them or get to know them and their needs.
When I first moved to Montana, I came to this facility. I had previously been a member at this same organization's facility back in Illinois and wanted to be a part of it again.
I remember arriving at the front desk to inquire about a tour and pricing, and was not greeted at all. I had to say, "Excuse me, can you help?"
The person behind the desk was very unapproachable and seemed bothered by my request. Still, I persisted and asked about a tour. As we proceeded around the facility, I was given what I call, the Building tour, a tour that describes everything in the building. No questions about me. Nothing to ask why I was there or what I was interested in. Just descriptions of where the bathrooms were, the location of the weight room and so forth. Rather boring, in my opinion.
When we arrived back at the front desk, the person proceeded to sit back down and go back to their computer. I said, "Well, I would like to sign up." The person pointed at two computers and said, "over there".
What in the world?
I value good customer service, people and respect. Do you?
The reason I write about this experience is because I do not want you to have an experience like I did. I do not want you to have to figure everything out for yourself and have you feel alone.
I do not want to leave you hanging.
