Does displaying your images from your session help with your child's self esteem? Does it give them a sense of belonging?
Every person has their own unique way to boost their confidence and how they feel about themselves. For some, getting a haircut is an effective way to feel confident in their appearance. For others, buying a new outfit or two restores self assurance and poise. But did you ever think that displaying images of you with your family and friends is another powerful way to increase your personal self esteem and give you a sense of belonging? Especially with children?
It is true! While this may not be the first method you consider when it comes to helping your self confidence get a boost, proudly displaying family portraits on the walls of your home will surely make you and others around you feel good about yourself. And, isn't that a message that we can proudly pass along to those around us, mostly our children?
No matter what age they are at, a child is always at an impressionable age. There is always a lesson to be taught, and there are a few lessons to instill in them as important as maintaining and improving how they think and feel about themselves.
Here are a few reasons why displaying your family images-especially individual ones of your children-will help them and you develop a positive confidence that will be carried throughout a lifetime.
It Creates a Sense of Belonging
A child seeing themselves in a portrait next to other family members is naturally going to cause them to create some personal comparisons; my hair looks like my mom's, my dad and I have the same eyes. Those mirrored traits, and their ability to recognize them, creates a sense of comfort. It is knowing that these people, their beloved family members, are just like them, and that they can always be confident that they can be themselves around those people.
It also gives a child a sense that they belong with this group; this "tribe". This is my family, this is where I belong, this is where I fit in the world!
It Helps Identify Their Family Unit
When you are a child, everything seems big and larger than life, even the members of your own family. But, seeing where their place is within their family unit allows them to see themselves as a valued part. Although a family portrait or photograph is usually more of a posed image, it still creates a personal image in a child's mind of a safe and supportive environment.
It Helps to see the Love and Connection of the Family
When a portrait is seen, the first thing that usually comes to mind is the memory of when it was taken, and all the funny, crazy, and/or wonderful things that happened to create that image. Perhaps, dad fell in the mud, or mom and child tickled each other until they were blue in the face. These are the things that are usually remembered and called to mind when an image is viewed.
When a child sees his parents holding hands, and how mom is hugging him in the image, that shows just how much he or she is loved. It shows that the family has love and has a connection that is unlike any other. And, seeing that only reinforces the sense of belonging the child should feel in the family, and how much he or she is loved. Which, in turn, leads to a positive confidence and self esteem that helps the child become the person he or she is meant to be in the world.
What do you think these children are thinking when they see the above image? Do they feel loved and cherished? I think so!
